It’s finally May and for many students that also means it is finally graduation time. Regardless of where the diploma is coming from, all graduations are worthy of celebration because it is a big achievement and testament to a great deal of hard work. In honor of this season, we would like to congratulate the high school seniors of Jesse’s House for another year of 100% on-time graduation! Reaching the end of an academic career is bittersweet as you can finally see everything you have been working for right in front of you. The late nights spent studying for a test, trying to find the motivation to get all that homework done, and of course, dealing with the stresses of day-to-day life have finally led you to the end of a chapter. It certainly is not a bump-free road to travel down, especially if you had to deal with struggles outside of school. For students in the foster care system those struggles might have been particularly burdensome and may have even resulted in a delayed graduation or no graduation at all. Graduation Rates of Students in The System Students in foster care deal with an isolated set of challenges outside of the ones presented in the classroom. The things a lot of students can take for granted like financial resources, support, and stability are not nearly as common for students in the system. Foster kids have to manage through school changes, home changes, and overall lack of predictability in their lives. Thus, getting through high school poses a much greater task for them and is more likely to result in a drop-out or delayed graduation. Studies show that only 50% of children in the foster care system will finish high school. Due to all of the barriers and chaos they have to navigate to get through school, they are also less likely to pursue higher education. Their lack of resources and support make the task of getting a college degree much less enticing. As a result, roughly only 3% of these students will go on to pursue a degree. And unfortunately, the academic challenges don’t disappear after completing school. They are likely to evolve in to hardship securing gainful employment, which presents them with a whole new set of challenges. The Jesse’s House Difference In the state of Georgia, roughly 11% of foster kids are graduating on time. Our team at Jesse’s House is proud to have continued our 100% percent on-time graduation rate for the class of 2022. We are fortunate to receive the love from those around us and be able to share it with our residents. We are elated for our graduating seniors this year! Their hard work has landed them with a diploma, right on schedule. Because of the incredible support of our community, we have been able to provide the right care, guidance and resources to help our seniors cross the high school finish-line. Our seniors can now enter this next chapter of their lives with the confidence and resources necessary to continue setting themselves up for a bright future, despite their past struggles. On-time graduation does not end with the class of 2022. We will continue to strive for this standard in the years to come and ensure our girls get the chance to pursue the future they deserve. With your continued contributions to our mission and our residents, we can proceed with caring, supporting and empowering our girls. Join us in congratulating the class of 2022 at Jesse’s House! We are now accepting graduation cards for the girls to show them how proud we are. If you would like to participate, you can send a card or note to P.O. Box 3318 Cumming, GA 30028.
